Gaining understanding about cultures other than our own requires intentionality, and a mind that is open and receptive to new information. Part of the Fulbright mission is to foster understanding among the nations of the world. A myriad of communities within the United States borders are made up of peoples from all parts of our world.

Black history spans the entire history of America. Black History Month offers a time to reflect on our nation’s past and the innumerable contributions black Americans have made to our country’s founding and development. It is a time to engage the contemporary by exploring how black individuals and communities positively shape daily life.

50 Shades of Black’ is a team of artists that uses the power of art to celebrate the spectrum of blackness by exploring sexuality and skin tone in the formation of identity.

Avenues for Expanding Understanding of Black Culture and Black Diversity:

    • Learn about the changemakers of you own city, town, or state. They may be politicians, artists, journalists, business owners, or other individuals who contribute to your local community;
    • Identify several personalities of interest to you and find materials written about them. City, state, local, and university libraries are excellent resources for readers interested in learning more;
    • Research the work that black artists have contributed to your favorite music genre or other artform;
    • Search for reliable websites, such as ’50 Shades of Blackness,’ and blogs whose work provides insight into black identity and culture in America and other parts of the world.
