Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has served as the United States’ largest education exchange program. The Fulbright Program has a goal of improving intercultural relations, cultural diplomacy, and intercultural competence through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills.

What role does Fulbright play in our rapidly changing world? How has the program evolved through the years?

On Wednesday, April 13, 2022, the International Relations Council will welcome international education experts and four former Fulbrighters to share their experiences and provide recommendations for those who may be interested in participating in the Fulbright Program.

Panelists include:

Dr. Charlie Bankart, Associate Vice Provost for International Affairs at the University of Kansas where he serves as Senior International Affairs Officer.

Dr. Tamara Falicov, Associate Dean for Research in the Arts and Humanities in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and a Professor in the Department of Film and Media Studies at the University of Kansas. She is the recipient of a Fulbright scholarship to Argentina, the result of which is the book The Cinematic Tango: Contemporary Argentine Film, which was selected as a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title, 2008. Dr. Falicov was a Fulbright Specialist to Portugal in 2018 and gave workshops at the Icaro film festivals in Honduras (2018) and Guatemala (2019).

Dr. Michael Makara is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Central Missouri. His research focuses on politics in authoritarian regimes and civil-military relations, with a regional focus on the Middle East. Dr. Makara worked in Jordan for over two years as a research fellow with both Fulbright and the American Center of Oriental Research.

Noelle Brooks graduated from the University of Central Missouri with a double major in international studies and Spanish before heading to Mexico as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant.

Moderator: Lee Rivers is a global education specialist with over a decade of experience managing outreach and recruitment strategies for educational and cultural exchange programs. He also participated in a Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. As an advocate for educational opportunities abroad, Lee is passionate about increasing access for underrepresented populations.
