Introductory Workshop:

The photos we save and the photos we take show what we care about and hope to preserve, what moves and inspires us, the people, places, stories and experiences that bring meaning into our lives. In this introductory workshop, you will write creatively from a travel-themed personal photo. It may be from your Fulbright experience abroad, or recent or past photo from any journey you have taken in your life. You’ve captured your adventures in images––it’s time to take them out and let them spark your creativity through writing. Bring 1-3 personal travel photos to write from.

This free, virtual workshop is an introduction to the five-week virtual course which follows.

Date: Thursday, September 22, 2022

Time: 7:00 p.m. – 8:15 p.m. (CST) (GMT-5)

Cost: EARLY BIRD by Sept. 26, 2022, $195; then after, $250

You’ve captured your adventures in images––it’s time to take them out and let them spark your creativity through writing. In this five-session course, Kelly will guide you to generate dynamic writing from your Fulbright experience photos or other personal travel photos. Writing from photos allows us to approach our pictures as works of art––no matter the quality of the photo, we can approach them with an artist’s perception and awareness of powerful hidden meanings and revelations worthy of development into creative prose and poetry.

Writing from personal photos allows us to capture our memories and discoveries, connect with beauty and probe the deeper meaning of an image for new awareness. The writing generated in this workshop will give voice to your travel experiences that will be personally satisfying and engaging for others.

Each participant will bring personal travel photos weekly. Whether you’re writing poetry or prose, memoir or a blog, family history or a monologue, your personal photos will be an excellent prompt to compelling writing, and we’ll attend to the process of revision and the development of craft.
