December 3rd is International Day of Persons with Disabilities. An estimated one billion people are living with disabilities worldwide. Too often, many face barriers to inclusion in key aspects of society, such as housing, transportation, travel, educational systems, and the workplace.

Fulbright Impact in the Field: Disability Rights, Inclusion, and the International Legacy of the ADA

The aim of International Day of Persons with Disabilities is to promote empowerment and help create real opportunities for people with disabilities. When people are empowered, they are better prepared to take advantage of opportunities, they become agents of change and can more readily embrace their civic responsibilities.

The Fulbright Program, in its August 20, 2021, installment of ‘Fulbright Impact in the Field,’ focused on disability rights, inclusion, and the international legacy of the ADA.

The Americans with Disabilities Act had its 30th Anniversary in 2020. That year, Arlene Kanter (2009 U.S. Scholar to Israel), the founder and Director of Syracuse University’s College of Law’s Disability Law and Policy Program (DLPP), moderated a conversation with Istou Diallo (2018 U.S. Student to India), Joseph Hill (2007 U.S. Student to Italy), and Pintu Kumar (2015 Visiting Scholar from India).

The Fulbright alumni on this panel are accessibility, or accessibility and inclusion advocates, as well as legal experts, each of whom identify as having a disability. You can hear from the panel on the Fulbright Program’s YouTube Channel.
